Aboriginal Calendar Systems

On Tuesday 5/6O explored ‘Australian Indigenous Weather Knowledge’, learning about different calendar systems and how some groups used the tide and moons to tell the time.

Students worked in groups to become experts on one of the calendar systems used by Aboriginal tribes (check out some of these at: http://www.bom.gov.au/iwk/). The students were fascinated by the way different groups determined the seasons, – often using the natural patterns of the flora and fauna – as well as by the varied number of seasons (and ‘sub-seasons’) for different tribes.

Above is an example of the Miriwoong Calendar, which has three seasons.

This activity was connected to our maths unit on ‘Time’ as well as our term one inquiry focus, exploring Australian history.

Check out some of their fantastic work…
